Armpit Rash!!

I've had a couple of longish sessions on the beach recently, both over 2 hours and 20 miles done, and it's been great fun. However, after the buzz has worn off and I'm home, I've found that I've rubbed raw the creases in my armpits and it takes a while to heal. Its from the the action of working the kite but I' wondering what I can do to prevent it. I tried vaseline before I started but my clothes seemed to rub that away....

Does anybody else suffer from this?

Jules,

That sounds mighty painfull and not pleasent :(

I can only suggest a couple of pointers.......is the top, jacket, t-shirt you are wearing too tight???.....have you tried a different length harness line maybe the one you have is a little long and you are streching a bit far???

Look at changing your deoderant??....maybe go for an anti-perspirant if your not already the Gillette one is very good I have found and have tried a few....unless you have alergies of course.....also cotton is a bugger for retaining moisture some of the more technical base layers with moisture wicking abilities would also help you.

'tis indeed rather painful - normally the day after is the worst but it can take a while to heal due to the location!! I was thinking that the clothing was too loose, on both occasions I've been wearing a normal loose cotton T shirt and nothing else to restrict it. I thought that cotton would be best but I'm inclinded to try a rash top. I'm also using a seat harness with a bar and chicken loop so there's not a great deal I can do so reduce that length - I'm a Mitchum anti-perspirant and thinking about it I wasn't at the time, so that might help...

What about looking at a surfing rash vest? About 20ish quid and are pretty good. Never tried it whilst buggying but helps bigtime with the surfing.

I'll give them a try. Are they meant to be the first layer and then you put other stuff on top?

This might sound a strange solution mate, but try changing your washing powder.

I had exactly the same trouble YEARS ago before getting into kiting and found that I was allergic to Biological Washing Powder, so ALL my clothes would cause this when I got hot..

I changed to Non-Bio powder and never looked back:)

It's wrth a go. I also use those clever base layers that WICK away the moisture. Hiking/Camping shops sell them. In fact, most sorts/clothes shops sell them now and they're not expensive (around £12 to £15).

Yeah, rash vest, that's gota be worth a go....cotton aint the best if you do perspire badly form 'the pit' area....I suffer badly with terrible sweaty arm pits and cant wear any cotton when It's hot or doing any form of exercise....another point on allergies and washing powder, if you can add a extra rinse or have a water plus button on your machine, this could help you. Also remember that wool or delicate cycle will have a higher water level than a cotton wash and is also worth trying after you have looked at the washing powder. This will get rid of most of the enzymes (if bio) and perfumes.

:)

Keep us updated.....would like to know that you can buggy for long periods in comfort :D

I get heat rashes on my body sometimes because I get very hot when buggying.

After showering & drying off, I rub 'Selsun' on the rashed areas. Within a day or two, it's cleared up.

Selsun is readily available in almost all chemists and pharmacies.

I think the suggestions to use a less agressive under arm deodorant and get shirt washed in bio powders will help.

Look also at the material of your shirt. I find that 100% cotton material is best.

I don't know if it will help but might be worth a try. Dust talcum powder after on the areas where you suffer the most.

vasiline will stop the problem. cycle racers get it on the inside of the legs and between there bum cheaks, long distance swimmers get under theres arm pits. there are a few differant things you can buy buy pertrolium gell would sort it. you will need to keep an eye thou as it will wipe off onto you T'shirt. then us a post care like what SY is saying about or zinc cream, the white stuff you put on babies bums to help with nappy rash.

We may be confusing a few related things which aren't exactly the same. Here's my penny's worth- I work in dermatology.

Fungal infection is possible but is unlikely to be both armpits at once (treat with creams from chemist, Selsun is an anti-fungal treatment).

Irritation from chemicals is unlikely as this would be just as true in a normal day as one spent kiting. (In my experience changing washing powder rarely helps skin problems as modern washing wachines are very good at rinsing residues, old style machines may have left some behind)

To my mind physical irritation ie rubbing is the culprit here. Looking at your clothes to ensure they aren't adding to the problem is worthwhile. You either need them very close- fitting ie rash vest, or loose fitting enough so that they stay free of the problem area. Talc is probably of benefit as long as you don't sweat a lot, it can cake with the moisture and add to the problem.

If you do find the irritation there, slap on lots of moisturising creams.

Yes mate, meant as a first layer, made of noeprene, spandex, lycra mix. Ultra comfy and warms you up when wet. As i said ive not tried this buggying so dont know what sort of result you can expect.

Only problem is if you have a bit of a beer belly, not very flattering.

You've been looking, haven't you!!:D I'll wear a more loose top over it....

Thanks Castle, I had similar thoughts. I've tried the really loose clothing but I suspect it's just my physical build (I suffered the same with large thighs when I used to run) and is the result of two hours of chafing. I think its time to try tight clothing!

Don't change your deoderant like i did a couple of years ago. I have always used lynx roll on for years and years but tesco ran out so i tried their own brand.

Had a massive reaction and my skin fell off under my arm:( clumps of skin dropping off..

went to doctors and he said thet the new b.o basher had reacted to the lynx which had penertrated my pours....very painfull
