tszy
Like most folks in this post festive season period, my current account is greatly depleted and with pay day at the end of this month, I found my self having to revert to my Lloyds TSB account where I keep a few standing orders etc and transfer slightly more going in than comes out so I knew I had something in there to tide me over. I tried using my Lloyds TSB card to purchase a weekly pass on our local transport system and the card was declined – this happened 3 times in 2 days. I'd heard about the recent problems with Lloyds TSB debit cards and checked their website where they are informing customers that the recent problem with debit cards is now resolved. I contacted them to let them know that not all the issues are resolved and they sympathised with me confirmed the pin was not blocked and offered me £20:00 'for the inconvenience' - so far so good. Next came the suggestion that I could avoid such problems in the future by signing up for a 'back up card' – a credit card so that I could pay my way and settle the balance within the month to avoid charges. However, I'm aware that most credit card accounts come with built in benefits such as discounts for obscure services that you are unlikely to use for which they can [ and do ] charge you a monthly rate for the privilege. So, despite all the adverse publicity that the high street banks have been subjected to, and the current wave of adverts trying to present banks as reformed characters, now doing you favours – this particular problem with the Lloyds TSB debit cards is being used as an opportunity to get more credit cards out the door thereby raking in even more stealth charges from the cash strapped masses who can ill afford it. Cynical in the extreme FOR YOUR INFORMATION All banks do have credit card accounts that don't incur these stealth charges but you must insist on this else the default is you'll not get one. These charges are not just confined to credit cards so check your debit card bank statements. If it states that your account is a 'platinum' or 'privilege' or some other important sounding label, they will be simply taking between £10 to £20 a month out of your account – again you can elect to drop onto a bog standard bank account with no stealth charges. Reformed characters ? - in my opinion repeat offenders.

The Geoff
If you want something even sillier, the Clydesdale bank once charged me £30 for having "a non-profitable account". I don't use a credit card, I very rarely go overdrawn, I don't borrow money - basically, they were charging me for not doing anything they could charge me for. I asked for written confirmation for the reason behind the charge so I could "send it to the newspapers" and they refunded the charge - then tried it again six months later, so I closed the account. tszy
I recommend that everyone should read - “The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists” by Robert Tressell . [ first published 100 years ago !!!] Read the chapter about the gas works – a complete blueprint for what's just happened in the banking sector in recent years.
