Fixed Bridle or Depower?

Funny, I bought a 15m manta for those calm days and it rapidly became my first kite out of the bag on most days

its a bit like the old washngo advert about taking 2 bottles into the shower except in this case its :-

take 8 fbs camping to use with the bug, not me i take 3 depowers and end up using 2 of them (15m manta and 6m access)

XP. When I said bigger kite to put away, I did mean proportionately. Fly a 6 fb, you fly a 10 depower. Bigger kite to put away.

Depower quicker. Well I think I said 'in my experience' anyway and yes I do unfortunately. Cruiisee as you say, sums it up for me.

A lot of guys like to fly dp here in the states. One buddy, I've only ever seen flying a 15m phanny 1,... He says if he can hold the bar in one hand and a beer in the other, he's good :)

I've thought of trying, but I just prefer not to... I fly FB for 3 reasons: wind conditions, set up time and price.

1. My wind is pretty sketchy with more lulls than gusts, and typically blowing less than 10mph. It's my understanding that depow doesn't like those conditions and that FB will beat out depow in low wind most any day. I'm finding my 8.6m is becoming my most frequently used kite.

2. I know once you get depow set up how you like, it takes relatively little time to set up, but both Arcs and LEIs require some sort of inflating. My flying/riding time is limit and often abbreviated (I haven't buggied in almost 2 months) and I like to have as little set up and break down as possible.

3. I'm often tempted by the prices offered on some for the used Arcs but I remind myself of 1. And 2. And realize it's not worth it to me. I visit Jekyll Island regularly, but not often enough to make it worth it.

Long and short... I'm an FB kind of guy.

I think with the bike, if you mean kite bike, the depower is the best option because of the ability to balance the power must efficiently. I assume you need lift but not want excessive and the depower allows this.

Yeah mick I meant kite bike ,I don't really require any lift pure traction will do as lift only makes it more difficult to stay I the seat and apply the kites power . So a race kite would be ideal but as you know they only work on handles and require more skill than a de power, now if you study my quiver you can see I have a mix and as I said earlier I've not tried handles while using the bike only bar which is easier I think but generally de powers are slower to respond and kite bikes need faster reactions from kite and rider compared to buggy s so I find the halfway house is best (you are going to hate what iam about to say lol ) turbo turbo bar .... I bought ozone method 6.5 with a turbo bar (my 2nd one mmmmmmm) purely for the bike as I find the turbo on fixed bridle faster than depower , some de powers are quicker than other s Air evolution very slow on the bar compared to my flysurfer and the ozone frenzy sits somewhere in the middle of those.

But hey having a right old mix of kites keeps the fun in the sport and they all have their time and place ,inland flying sorts the men out from the coastal flyers ,anyone and anything will fly on the coast ,but that's another topic

Yeah de powers are easy if not boring at times checkout my kite bike vids on you tube (Lawrence T ) flying depower balancing bike and holding my phone while filming oh and looking out for the numpty public that just get in the way !

You maybe a fb guy and I hear what you are saying but you have to try a flysurfer awesome kites mine is the most used most loved kite in the quiver and I think good for the conditions and time scales you are talking about. Set up , pack up times no different to fb really with practice

Hi soliver

I looked at your post and some of reasons why not to go depower, I have found / seen some work around's that may sway your decisions.

Here are a couple of clips to show how fast you can inflate some kites:

LEI:

But watch out, as other videos in his thread feature Ninjas.

Twin skin:

And yes, that was under a minute, thanks for the videos Carl.

I fly in gusty conditions at my local spot on a land board and buggies, when the wind is sub 12 mph I use an 8.5 Blade, it can be great fun, but dangerous in gusts, the kite tries to either lift me or pull my arms out of their sockets or both :) So I believe if your area is similar to the one I occasionally use then maybe a De-Power could be a good option to handle your gusty conditions.

If cost is a priority, I would suggest a large / very large twin skin with a leaf blower, Twin Skins are known gust munchers and so are better in gusty conditions, allot of my flying buddies use them. If cost is no concern, then go for a Speed, with Fly Surfer bringing out a new / redesigned kite you might find the larger Speed 3's cheaper than normal. So that's only eye watering costs rather than nut crunching costs :)

A bit off topic, but hey.
