New UK solo 24hr distance record

chinook

Recommended Posts

Set the distance record back in April with 246 miles, only for Krazy Karl to beat in June with 262 miles! Been waiting since July to have another crack at it, thought my time was up for this year! However on my favourite beach Black Rock, SW winds all day and a neap tide, opportunity came knocking yesterday (21/10/11) to go out and beat the record. Managed 277 miles started at 6:30 AM and finished at 6:50 PM. Thanks to my wife and son for their support, during a very long day!!

Luckily the beach was like a snooker table, perfect conditions. Apart from the odd rain shower!

Losing the light, head torch back on again.

6:50 PM, happy to finish!!

Great achievement yet again well done...

distance-solo-24hrs

FYA, Ziggy Racek did his 289.8 miles "within 12hrs" at Farno this year, Although there is not a category for 12hrs, I consider Ziggy's distance the one to beat for a 12hr session.

Even though your moving time was under 12hrs, you were honest enough to state your total time was 12hrs 20 minutes

I have no idea how you motivate yourself to do such a distance, the fatigue must be emmence...tremendously well done again to you, UKs No1 distance buggier

I've often taken part in endurance events, 100km mountain bike races and now triathlons so the challenge of going long in a buggy must appeal to my diesel engine of a body, I don't mind plodding along all day. Felt better this time at the end of the day compaired to my last attempt at BLS, son wanted me to go on to 300 miles but the rain was returning again and my fingers where going numb with being wet and cold. Glad I did stop now, suffering with both thighs stiff and sore. Painful right hip, right forearm and sore abs. :( Think it will be a while before I try again.

I always thought that the record could be broken in just daylight (ish)

its my plan same as you i think depower is the way to go, so much easier, im at hoylake so getting wind and tide right is a bit tougher, but with a 20 to 25mph wind in summer then you have 5am to 9pm in good light, thats 16 hours of good light with a beach that you can do 2 mile runs on

the record will come to hoylake eventualy!!

seriously congrats on an outstanding achievment, true dedication. ive only flown blackrock twice and loved it both times, watching the vid makes me want to go there again!

oh and no getting up at silly times, im 15 mins from hoylake

Karl was sick when he got your message, still he was at Hoylake doing 50mph runs (I think 53.5 was his best) so enjoying himself plenty, and beating Mark.

Matt - I heard you had to return to the pits and have a cry after you did your top speed. In my book that's not a record, it's an accident so it shouldn't count :D

Thats good speed and great distance. But i wonder why you don't take some longer breaks pace it a bit easier and kite through the night and blaze the 24hr world record to bits? yourve obviously got the speed/beach/wind/gear/skill combo to do it.

In my 24hr landboard attempt i did way less miles that you as my average speed was alot lower but i was flying around 19 of the 24 hours. next time i think i can fly for maybe 22 of the 24 hours.

I'm always amaised at what the body can withstand. i'm sure if you carried on your body would have stepped up and lasted.

Second thought. Don't kite through the night and slam the world record. I want my good buddy Gannet to take the record back!!...

Lastly. if its raining alot. think inflatables!. almost no performance drop in the rain.

Thought about the 24hr record but its finding a public beach with a long enough run to keep up a good average speed . At black rock sands the longest run I had was just over 1 mile. When the beach was wet and in the dark I was down to about 0.7 mile.

Also the longer I flew the thought of a more comfy buggy was more appealing rather than on barrows for 12 hrs+. Just concerned with a bigger bug and the number of turns I'm doing, it would bring my average speed down. Could do with "Hert"z hire for buggies and hire an apex or ptw for the day!

sponsership mate. Ask those buggy builders if they want to supply a buggy or 3 for the day. They'll then be able to advertise that their bug is the world record holder!!!...

ps we have 50km beach but it bends slightly and wind is usually cross cross on so we find ourselves doing 1km runs on the right spot. Also we are forced into the dunes for 10 or the 24 yours as the tide comes right in and the hard sand is all gone!...

  • 7 months later...

Just watched your vid chinook, I really have my work cut out. If I don't get a good S.E. wind then I'm thinking your title is safe. Whether I beat it or not.... its all for a good cause
