What I Learned About Buggying Today

As a novice:

If the wind is strong enough to keep the tide in for an extra hour, it is probably not blowing at between 15 and 18mph.

If a 3m kite feels even nslightly overpowered in gusts, the wind is too strong.

If the kite can accelerate a combined weight of about 165 kilos of buggy and pilot to 20mph+ in less than 100m, as a novice you're probably overpowered.

If the kite drops for no reason don't turn away from it, it is going to power up again.

When the kite does power up in a 30mph+ gust, do expect to enjoy your first OBE when you're doing 15mph in the opposite direction.

When you land 3m from where you started, that pain really is a broken collar bone and ribs.

Do expect to spend hours in A&E waiting to get laughed at by the staff.

I'm not going to stop though, the feeling I experienced before the OBE was like nothing else, I want more of that. I also owe a huge vote of thanks to the people who helped me out, they were brilliant and I'm not sure I can thank them enough.

Prescient or what coolboarder?

I'll admit that it does fecking hurt and that it makes life difficult, have to see another specialist monday as something doesn't seem right with my shoulder.

still, it'll be hard to have a worse OBE in the future ;)

Yup to be fair that sucks....

- I have some respect that you were out with that kite in that wind ;) BEFORE stupid(ity) sets in - but you know better now right ?

- I have some respect that you went to A and E and got laughed at - Oh it's a "sports injury" is it sir - BACK OF THE QUEUE - if he passes out get him to X-ray double quick (otherwise he waits at least an hour)

Collar bones are the shit"est" bone in the body - in this sport they break too easily

Ribs are second best - only just :(

heal quick dude and be careful next time ;) :)

oh and "tested to ......." I've not managed to break a collar bone yet but I try hard - buggies and handles are easy as are fingers and ligaments but bines ny time is yet to come - scheduled in this weekend though as I have a surprise planned

F

Heal soon Tony, I still have probs with my sholder, did not brake the bone, but ripped 2 of the 3 ligaments off, both shoulders, different times..

Pads, thats what you need, so you will use these instead of putting your arms out straight, it's either the coller bone or your wrists that go then.

And don't give up on the flying, it will take a while to get back you confidence, but it's worth it...

Aww gutted, good luck with the rehab, hopefully it won't be too long till you're back in the bug :)

What I learnt after a similar incident -

Cider/lager tastes even better when you should be in work & someone else is driving you to & from the pub.

Stunt kites do nothing to help feed the missing addiction even if you pay £175 for a 'really good one".

Cycling 1 handed can be a bit scary

Ice hockey shoulder padding gets rid of the scary demons in your head once your fit to ride again.

Good luck matey :)

What rotten luck Tony.

I hope you are back to good health as quickly as possible.

Smashed my right shoulder once when a rear buggy axle bolt broke & wheel came off at around 55 kph. This kept me from kiting for a few weeks and hurt when I got kiting again. Probably, I started kiting too early.

Even after several years it feels stiff and not as good as my left shoulder.

What gave me lots of confidence when I got back into the buggy was wearing body armour. I have been wearing armour ever since my accisdent and even fallen on the shoulder a few time but good padding saved me from any further distress.

@ Frakke, I got passed from doctor to doctor and they all asked how it happened, they all had a laugh at me, at one point four of them were looking at my x-rays and chattering about them.

Thanks for all the support, pads and armour are next on my shopping list, along with a wind meter.
