A little taste of Fowlers Bay. I think this spot has HUGE buggy potential - I had limited time and really only scratched the surface. Plus my timing coincided with 2 football teams having their annual break up over on Scotts Beach which meant a whole bunch of possibly not-quite-sober 4wds in the dunes keeping me away. The dunes are steep - there are also some largish 'holes' or depressions that you would struggle to pull your buggy out of. I think it would take several days of walking around/4wd around to find what flat-ish spots worked in what winds. There is probably also a uniq skill set involved in dune riding - @plummet and @Sand-Yeti (fancy meeting Dave on this trip!!) could probably give us a few tips on this. I quickly found out that the size of kite needed for pulling me along on a flat beach wasn't going to cut it in the dunes. The sand also varied quite a bit from hard to very soft with few surface clues visible to my eye. The bumpy bits are mostly 4wd drive tracks from 'the break up'. And let's not forget the beach. There was a lot of seaweed for the 1st km or so from the pier but then it widened out into a Kingston-ish beach and disappeared off into the distance in a long graceful curve. Needs an Easterly or South Easterly for it to work which I sadly didn't get to coincide with a low tide. I think this place could well justify a buggy meet there in future years - something to think about. The caravan park is only a few minutes walk from the dunes. Not much grass in the caravan park but it's got good amenities and a nice kiosk with friendly managers. And bring your fishing rods.

Friday morning at 7.30am the big trip west begins. Work is slack during September so I figure I have the time to do this trip now, so I should do it while I can. Not looking forward to the first day drive from Ballarat to either Crystal Brook or Pt Pirie, somewhere around the 900km mark. I figure I'll go via Mildura and skip the drive through Adelaide. From there I'll head to Fowlers Bay which is another 700km, and I'm hoping to arrive there late afternoon on the Saturday. Huge dunes and whales seem to be the main attraction there. Not sure how soft the dunes will be and whether they will be buggyable or not for me but there's one way to find out. Figure I'll stay and explore the place on the Sunday and Monday then head across the Nullabor on Tues stopping to take lots of pics of the cliffs. Hopefully, there'll be some wind to get the kap rig up over the bight for some interesting photos. Overnight somewhere around Cocklebiddy then off to Lefroy on Wednesday....unless the wind is wrong and it's wet, then it will be down to Esperance and maybe have a buggy on the beach with Chook, Gumnuts and DJsylk. Will try and use the phone for some updates and pics as I go and should have a shirt load of photos & vids when I get back. I'll keep an eye out for good buggy spots on the way over and can always stop and spend a day or two on the way back.
