    Peacock Hand Warmer

    The Peacock Hand Warmer

Right from an early age I have suffered from cold hands, gloves, although they will keep your hands warm, will hinder almost everything you try to do and invariably end up off more times than on.

Over the last few years I have experimented with charcoal hand warmers, use once chemical warmers and re-usable chemical hand warmers, all with varying degrees of success. That is until last year when a friend on my construction site suggested a peacock hand warmer. My job entails standing behind surveying equipment for long periods of time, but with the use of un-gloved fingers.

    What is it?

Apparently the technology used has been around since 1923 plenty of time to iron out any wrinkles or design faults. It is basically the size of a pack of playing cards, shiny metal with a peacock embossed grill.

    how does it work?

Well to be honest I don't really know! according to the blurb that comes with it,platinum catalyst is the method(no I'm not sure either). What I do know is that when you do fill it up with the recommended fuel(either proper hand warmer fluid, benzine(not benzene)or most commonly lighter fuel)the thought of putting a matcth anywhere near it fills you with dread. But light it I did, from arms length expecting it to explode,it didn't.

    Is it warm?

After 5 minutes a warm feeling can be felt from the velvet bag you have to place it in,this can be put in a pocket without fear of it setting fire to your coat(something I always had when using a charcoal burner),and on half a fill the hand warmer will keep a constant heat for approximately 12 hours.

    Is it worth it?

For about £20-£25 depending on where you buy it from I would say that the Peacock hand warmer was one of the best pieces of out-door equipment I have ever used, whether using it for kite flying, walking or winter working.

Try one yourself I guarantee you will not have cold hands again.

i have a couple of those hot gel ones, they're good, but they're only really warm for about half an hour, and then you have to boilthem for 20 minutes to recharge them. i prefer those single use ones, but that's rather an expensive way of doing it. so i might try this
