My backroundI've been flying two and four line kites for a couple of years, and fly a Flexy Super 10, Beamer 2.5, Revolution Blast 2-4, Blade 6.6, and a Montana 7. Recently started buggying. I Built a pair of doomwheels but haven't got the guts to try the darn things yet.
I was looking for a smaller kite for buggying in higher winds that wouldn't break the bank. I saw and ad offering the profoil 3.5 for $105, wich is half the retail cost. I ordered a Hot pink one and the price dropped to $85! I added a purple1.5 because at $50 including handles, I just couldn't help myself. The pink ended up being just a shade lighter than "Hot Pink" in my opinion, but as my 220# bodybuilder friend slid downwind past me on his belly, it was fun to ask him if he was going to let a wimpy pink kite kick his ass like that.
Basics
Ted is liquidating his inventory of profoils for unknown reasons. The kite comes in a grey and black backpack with a diagonal colored stripe that may or may not match the color or your kite. There are two tiny mesh side pockets and one larger zippered pocket. The mesh bottom in the main area allows draining.
The kite comes with handles, but not lines. I used a set of 65' 330/220# Flexifoil lines for the 3.5 and 40' 150# Shanti lines for the 1.5. The aluminum handles are nicely padded with foam grips, one red, the other black. Although very comfortable, I do wonder about the life expectancy on the foam material. Kite killers are not included. I'll probably buy a pair for the 3.5. The bridles are knotted, and seem extremely sturdy. Workmanship and material in very good quality.
Flying
We took my nephew's 1 meter and a 1.5 out on a 12 - 15 mph day and everyone had a great time at our inland site. These smaller kites are great for kids, who seem to get the quad flying technique quicker than their parents. Maybe video games help? The next day it was blowing somewhere between "Howling" and "Like Stink". We left the kids at home and flew the 1.5 and the 3.5 on a day that would have been blown out had I been flying my Blade 6.6. The smaller kite turns on a dime and is very quick in strong winds. I found myself laughing out loud while trying to keep up with this little screamer. Collapses happened on occasion when flown too far to the side of the window, but were easily shaken out. Hit the ground and wad it up? No problem, just a couple of tugs and maybe a step or two back and you're up and flying again in a couple of seconds. When the wind was smooth, both kites would stay at the zenith, but when it was gusty, I would get the occasional collapse. Both kites fly beautifully from the top lines, but adding a touch of brake will definitely tighten up the turns. Both kites will actually rotate around a point about a third of the way inboard from the tip if pressed. Reverse launches aren't a problem. Overall, I very impressed with the Profoil series, and will probably order a 4.5 to complete my quiver in the next couple of weeks. I can highly recommend these, and for the price, I can't see anything else coming close.
