This was my first Kite. It had to be a budget kite as money is tight with me, and my wife wouldn't have been too impressed if I had gone and spent a fortune on "a whim"!
After a little research and spending days trawling the net for the best price a Beamer II 3.6 was purchased.
Well, it arrived with the comedy rucksack, and after a brief chuckle, I went straight up to my local flying spot to test it out.
I was impressed. The quality seemed good, the lines were pre-stretched and were the same length (which helps!) and within 10 minutes I was up, up and away.
I was flying in about 10mph winds and it flew well and sat at the zenith reasonably easily. I was impressed with the pull, absolutely no lift, but then I knew that would be the case. In the lower ends of the wind scale the Beamer needs to be kept away from the edge of the window as it does start to collapse but in higher winds this isnt a problem.
One thing I liked was the pre-knotted bridle for the brake lines. It has 7 knots already tied on so if you are after a little more control in high winds the knots are already there so tightening the brake lines is that much easier. In really high winds I have mine on the fifth knot to give me greater control. Obviously that would be down to personal preference but that works well for me. I have heard of people finding the knot they are most comfortable with and simply cutting off the excess so there is no unsightly bridle hanging in the sky.
In high winds this kite is a beast and really pulls. I flew in about 25mph the other week and managed to scud the length of my local football pitch in one go. Fair enough the grass was wet, but Im telling you this thing was really pulling.
The kite came with Killers which there is a lot of talk of snapping in high winds but I have had no problems with mine and have had to use them on a few occasions. They are pretty comfortable but again, down to personal preference if you want them to be replaced. The kite also came with a good quality, tough groundstake. Thats pucker and if you manage to bend that thing while pushing it into the ground, I would be mightily impressed!
Overall, I was and still am well impressed with the kite. For a budget, beginners kite I would say you can't go wrong. It performs well and at a fraction of the price of some of the other manufacturers, this is a good buy.
Happy Flying!
