South & Western Australia trip

Friday morning at 7.30am the big trip west begins.  Work is slack during September so I figure I have the time to do this trip now, so I should do it while I can.  Not looking forward to the first day drive from Ballarat to either Crystal Brook or Pt Pirie, somewhere around the 900km mark. I figure I'll go via Mildura and skip the drive through Adelaide.   From there I'll head to Fowlers Bay which is another 700km, and I'm hoping to arrive there late afternoon on the Saturday.  Huge dunes and whales seem to be the main attraction there.  Not sure how soft the dunes will be and whether they will be buggyable or not for me but there's one way to find out.  Figure I'll stay and explore the place on the Sunday and Monday then head across the Nullabor on Tues stopping to take lots of pics of the cliffs.  Hopefully, there'll be some wind to get the kap rig up over the bight for some interesting photos.  Overnight somewhere around Cocklebiddy then off to Lefroy on Wednesday....unless the wind is wrong and it's wet, then it will be down to Esperance and maybe have a buggy on the beach with Chook, Gumnuts and DJsylk.

Will try and use the phone for some updates and pics as I go and should have a shirt load of photos & vids when I get back.  I'll keep an eye out for good buggy spots on the way over and can always stop and spend a day or two on the way back.

Made Lefroy yesterday and found a modest amount of shade to pitch camp.  What a weird surface - sort of like melted then frozen ice cream or snow.  Very coarse and sharp when you run your fingers over it.  Also a bit like coarse blue metal with lots of tiny puddles so there was a good amount of spray constantly coming off the wheels.  Everything ends up coated in salt.  Should be an interesting weekend.

I made it to Lefroy yesterday it's great to catch up with @jhn.holgate and @chook.

The location is awesome but in the middle of nowhere and as John said the surface is like nothing you have seen and still very wet. Though a quick look this morning and the breeze has already moved the water.

The facilities are basic long drop toilet and bring your own water for a shower, but that aside I'm fairly comfortable...

It was good to get out on the buggy yesterday but the forecast isn't so promising today - though there is a bit of a breeze this morning.

And the Ozone R1 was awesome even in only 6-7 knots. Myself and the buggy ended up covered in salt.

we will see what the day brings...

Wind came to the party late in the day and Gumnuts and myself had a good run in one of the drier ponds.  The water did recede from the main lake today but the surface looked pretty rough.  Some of the ponds are like riding on ashphelt except its white and wet.  After a brief practice run around the course today it became clear to me that I would be a menace in a race - I don't even know the sailing right of way rules fortunately there's plenty of space and more ponds to buggy in.  DJsylk took me across the lake in the ATV to climb a sand dune on the other side which was a brilliant and surreal trip driving through 8 inches of blue water on white salt (which looked like it should have been sand). Thanks @DJ_Sylk that was awesome.

Fabulous sunset last night

being used to 2 months of 5 - 9 degree Ballarat weather makes it pretty easy for me to get cooked out here and I'm currently rehydrating with beer and cashews!   Very jealous of @gum-nuts camper trailer - bloody luxury!

With Chris's help, we almost got the $@$&@@?!! Pop up shelter back in it's bag.  Where's @nigel when you need him?  I'll do some sightseeing and shopping in Esperence this morning.  Many thanks to Chris V for his hospitality.   Chris is a land sailor who was at Lefroy and spotted me driving into Esperance.

John, you're leaving Lefroy already?

Lefroy is an awesome location when the conditions are right, but there was still a lot of water and that gets shifted around dependant on the wind direction. I think we had the best of it Sunday morning.

I headed home yesterday morning and John was planning on heading South to Esperance later in the day.

The camping at Lefroy is basic to say the least, I was glad to get home for a hot shower and shave. Spent today cleaning my gear including the R1 to ensure I got rid of all the salt, also started to look at some of the video - especially the bits I went flying past John!

These out of town boys are a bit soft and forgot to pack their teaspoons of concrete Joel.:sarcastic:

Had a terrible time with a very congested beach at Cape Le Grand this arvo.:dance3: Three cars went past the whole time we were there.

Wind was a steady 20 knots or so, straight onshore and John H, Kambalda John  and I had a fantastic time cruising the beach all arvo. I got home at 7.00pm

Like a dork I had forgotten my main kite bag in the rush to get there today, so was well under powered on only a 3.2 Vapor.

Even had a stallion and 2 mares idle down just before sunset to see what was going on in their patch.

John had the cameras rolling and I got a bit of footage as well. I'll see what I can do later on.

would have loved to join you on the beach today, very jealous.

yes, I must admit I like my comfort, hence the camper-trailer with power and water! But those long drops at Lefroy had to be the smelliest and most fly infested long-drops I've encountered!

I've got a nice 8.5m C-Quad you can practice on if you want? :laugh3:

I'd be a bit rusty, as I haven't had the C-Quads out for quite some time.

Lucky we had cool weather this year Mark. You should be there when it's hot, the flys are unbelievable. The old dunny budgies really come on song then. :sarcastic:

It's a bit like saying you ran past a kid crawling on all fours and won the race.... ;)

Asshole!!

had a great run with Chook and DJ at LeGrand yesterday arvo.  And just as well, this morning the senior ranger tells me NO unregistered vehicles on national park beaches.  The NP have authority to the low water mark whereas shire has authority only to high water mark.  You CAN buggy if you have applied for and received written permission from the dept.  fortunately we made the best of the wind conditions yesterday and theres no onshore wind forecast for today.

Did I mention how nice the beaches are here?

Buggies can't be registered, they fall into the class of a wheeled toy here in Vic, and suspect it's the same in WA as well.

That means we can travel on the foot path!!

So much for being a clean and green sport.

Now let me guess, if you had you dirt bike out tearing up the place, you'd be fine. Thank you Mr Ranger......NOT.

I am happy to be corrected here, but post the discussion about plovers at 13 beach I looked up the definition of a vehicle ( given vehicles are banned on that beach) and whilst regulations were not written with kite buggies in mind, I believe they were not exempt from being a vehicle.  However landboards and inline skates were exempt.

Having looked at the dictionary definition of vehicle for insurance purposes a kite buggy would be a vehicle however there may be a different definition in the legislation governing the types of vehicle that need to be registered.

Now back to the topic of John's trip, it looks fantastic. Having done the trip accross on the train I would love to drive it one day and have the time to explore properly on the way.

I have a bush fire meeting on Tuesday night with the Director of "Department of Parks and Wildlife" that controls all national parks in WA.

I'll clear it up there. I've also sent our local area manager (he's on my lads cricket team) a note about it. When we spoke some time ago it was fine to use the beach in the national park.

We were going to sail on Cape Le Grande beach for Esperance festival of the wind 2 years ago. I still have the signed paperwork.

We seem to get these "camp hosts". (grey nomads, that volunteer to collect camp fees in remote areas so they can stay for free) and some are Nazi's.

Give them a bit of responsibility and they make up their own rules.

I'll find out.

After a couple of relaxing days at Cape Legrand it's time to turn for home.  My original plan was to call back into Fowlers Bay for a beach run but the forecast is for high 30's and northerly's so I don't think it's going to happen.  If I can make good distance today I'm going to try for an early Friday morning run along the Nullabor cliffs followed by breakfast and a kap session then off to either Pillbarra ? Rock or Kimba (with the mutant Galah).  But first to call into Chook's and get a photo of The Man, The Shed!
